Scouts

Scouts is the third section in the scouting family and is for boys and girls aged 10-14. It comes after cubs and before Explorers.

Our scouts meet as two separate troops at the Group HQ.  Both troops meet between 7:30 and 9.  “Wildcat” troop meet on a Wednesday, “Raptor” troop on a Thursday.

Plus of course both troops have plenty of weekend camps and trips out mostly together. Recent trips have included white water canoeing, a weekend climbing in the Peak District and mountain biking in Thetford Forest.

A typical evening could include anything from wide games to cook offs to falconry to first aid training. Having once even run a fashion show there’s not much we won’t have a try at!

Here are some of the things we’ve done recently:

After an epic summer camp where the scouts and explorers took every stitch of canvas we could lay our hands on it was time to get back to basics in October with an easy going camp in glorious autumn sunshine. A gentle hike into Copley campsite in St Ives, camp by the river and burn a load of food on the fires. What could be better to round off camping season?

July 2022 and summer camp very much a come back for the group! With 2020 and 2021 being badly affected by the pandemic it was the first time for 3 years that our scouts and explorers were able to make the most of a full week away which took them to Hawkhirst on the banks of Kielder Water in Northumberland.

Kielder Forest is one of the most remote places in the UK which gives great opportunity for everything from mountain biking to sailing and hiking to canoeing. It is also a place of outstanding beauty and wild life where the scouts were able to see everything from the very small like Great Crested Newts to the enormous, our site being circled by a magnificent Osprey regularly over the week.

All the photos of a fantastic week below 🙂

Scouts from both troops spent a gloriously sunny weekend at Gilwell Park, our national HQ, on a strangely quiet weekend! We were one of just 3 groups on the site’s 130 acres and spent the weekend climbing, pioneering, dangling on high ropes and just generally enjoying the peace and quiet of the home of the scout movement 🙂

On a fine June evening 16 scouts and 4 leaders gathered in Ipswich for a big step up from the last scout sailing trip which had featured two man dinghies. This time the scouts would find themselves crewing a pair of 49 foot ocean going yachts in the North Sea.

A gentle sail down the Orwell Estuary Friday night saw the boats drop anchor just short of Felixstowe before the next morning they headed out to sea with all hands on deck for a proper adventure!
