In the first of an occasional series here is the first report from 11 year old Rebekah, one of our scouts who is spending 6 months in New Zealand with her family. She has joined Island Bay Scout Troop and is joining in everything they do. Here she reports on ANZAC day, New Zealand’s equivalent of Remembrance Sunday.

A Highland Fling!
As well as the sailing trip older scouts and young leaders had the chance to join our friends from Hertfordshire Scouts on their Intermediate Mountaineering course at their mountaineering center at Lochearnhead in the Scottish Highlands.
The trip introduced our gang of 4 to the basics of mountaineering including navigation, mountain first aid, use of ice axes, use of ropes on steep terrain and wild camping. The week culminated in a 3 day, 2 night trek, wild camping in the mountains where they bagged a series of “munros” (mountains over 3000 feet high).
The scenery was nothing short of breath taking and was a chance for older scouts to stretch themselves before moving onto explorers. Next stop….. the Advanced Mountaineering Course at New Year!
Politicians put through their paces
With the General Election quickly approaching the troop’s Patrol Leaders, our senior 13 and 14 year old scouts, decided that they wanted to have a night themed on it and decided to invite the candidates for the Cambridge seat at May’s election to an evening to be grilled by the troop in a “Question Time” style event.
We were joined for the evening by Valerie Holt, campaigned for Liberal Democrat candidate Julian Huppert, Labour candidate Daniel Zeichner, Green Party Councillor Oscar Gillespie and UKIP candidate for South East Cambs Deborah Rennie.
Just like on the tv show none of the candidates knew any of the questions in advance and some were clearly surprised by the nature of some of them which varied between the voting age, use of cycle helmets, GCSE grade inflation and immigration. UKIP’s Deborah Rennie said “I was really impressed with the questions” and Labour’s Daniel Zeichner said ” it was actually the most interesting event we have done so far, because the audience was a much more genuine cross-section. I was very impressed by the young people”
They were clearly not the only ones to enjoy it as one scout called it “the best night I’ve had at scouts this year”, it looks like we may have now got some budding politicians in the making. The event also got coverage from the local press
The group would like to thank all those who gave up their time for the group in what is a very busy time in the run up to the election.
Cubs back in the day
So while reorganising a load of our archives we came across a huge number of photos showing what our cubs got up to between 2006 and 2009. It includes what we got up to in the scouts centenary year in 2007, a really special time to have been involved 🙂
Many of those featured are now explorer scouts or even leaders now. We’ve put them all in the gallery now here. Enjoy!
Flipping Marvelous!
The scout troop’s annual pancake flip off went with it’s usual mess and chaos on Thursday.
A firm fixture in the troop programme the scouts were invited to flip, flop, top and generally show off their culinary skills.
Top marks to Eagles for their creativity, Hawks for their awesome flipping ability and Kingfishers for brutal efficiency at cleaning up!
And finally we were joined for the evening by Lucas, a Brazilian scout leader who is currently in Cambridge learning English, see below with our Young Leaders. We’re hoping we didn’t leave him thinking that British scouts are in a state of constant noise, chaos, mess and always eating but then again…… 🙂
That Was The Year That Was
Well we’ve reached the end of yet another manic year and they say a picture paints a thousand words. So we won’t write much, just take a look at what we’ve been up to.
See you all next year!

New Scout Troop to open in April 2015!!
National Scout and Guide Orchestra – get applying!
Are you a scout or YL who will be 13+ in July 2015? Are you a promising musician at grade 5 or above? Then you can apply to join the national scout and guide orchestra to take part in a week long camp followed by two concerts in Harrogate, North Yorkshire in July.
You can find out more about the orchestra at their website here and can apply to join them for summer 2015 here. Best of all the timings mean you can come to the troop summer camp as well 🙂
Good luck!
Could you help grow the group? (And have loads of fun while you’re at it?)
12th Cambridge is one of the largest and most active scout groups in Cambridge and indeed in Cambridgeshire. We have a fantastic programme for young people aged 6-17.
We have just one problem….. demand is out stripping supply, especially for our scout troop (10-14 year olds). We currently have 40 scouts, both boys and girls, which is the largest the troop has been in many years. And we have a huge waiting list on top of that! We have reached the point though that we physically can’t fit any more scouts in our main hall at one time. We do though want to continue to grow.
The solution? We want to start a second scout troop to run on a Wednesday evening. And we’re looking for someone to run it! Could that someone be you?
We’re looking for someone with a sense of humor and a few hours to spare each week. There’s no need for any experience, you will have plenty of support and training, although enjoying being outdoors would be a great advantage.
Scouts will give you the chance to travel, with trips to Canada and The Netherlands in recent years and the opportunity to try everything from gliding to sailing to climbing.
If you are interest, then please get in touch, we are waiting to hear from you!
Scouts on the road to Wembley
This Thursday scouts will be a little bit different as the troop heads to Wembley stadium to see England play San Marino and will be among an expected crowd of around 50,000.
The game is a qualifier for the 2016 European Championship and while England should win comfortably against this opposition it’s easy to forget that games against San Marino have not always gone entirely to plan. Stuart Pearce will remember the game in 1993 for all the wrong reasons as San Marino set a record for the fastest ever goal scored in international football……
And as well as going to the game the troop will be providing live coverage of the game via our twitter account www.twitter.com/12thcambridge (@12thcambridge) and will be posting photos, comments and if phone batteries hold out some video as well. Full match report when we get back 🙂
